Transportation : getting to Montreal

BY PLANE

Located only 20 minutes from downtown, the Montréal-Trudeau Airport  is located only 20 minutes from downtown serves the world’s biggest airlines and receives direct flights from some 120 regular and seasonal destinations in Canada, the United States and abroad. An array of information and services is available upon arrival, including several options for making your way to the heart of the city: car rental and limousine transportation companies are on site as well as airport shuttles.

BY TRAIN OR BUS

VIA Rail Canada serve almost 500 Canadian cities. If you are coming from the United States, check information about  Amtrak train, with daily departures from many American cities to downtown Montréal.  Visitors pull into Montréal’s Central Station, which is conveniently linked to the Expo-Marathon location ( at Place Bonaventure), one block away from our official Hotel (Delta Hotel) and also linked to the underground Pedestrian Network and the Bonaventure metro station.

If you are planning a trip by bus, check with Orléans Express. You will arrive directly downtown at the Montréal Bus Central Station, which is also connected to the Underground Pedestrian Network via the Berri-UQAM metro station.

Transportation: getting around the city

BY FOOT

From the Quays of the Old Port of Montreal to Chinatown and from Little Italy to the Plateau Mont-Royal, Montrealers and visitors love to walk. From downtown Montreal, you can access the internationally renown Underground Pedestrian Network : a bustling 30-kilometre network of walkways, featuring 1,700 shops, restaurants, cinemas, hotels, museums, theaters and attractions.

BY MÉTRO

Montreal’s Metro is safe, affordable and clean.  It  can be accessed via the city’s Underground Pedestrian Network.

Good to know…

Marathon and half-marathon starting line on Jacques-Cartier Bridge: 10 minutes walk from Metro Jean-Drapeau (yellow line).  Most of the marathoners and half-marathoners arrive by this metro station.

  • Expo-Marathon and official hotel: at Bonaventure Station (orange line)
  • 10K start : 7 minutes walk from Rosemont station (orange line)
  • 5K start : Pie-IX station (green line)
  • 1K start: Viau Station (green line)

Metro operating hours on Race day:  5:30 a.m. to 1 a.m

Metro regular operating hours :

  • Monday to Friday: from 5:30 a.m. to 1 a.m.
  • Saturday :from 5:30 a.m. to 1:30 a.m.
  • Sunday: 5:30 a.m. to 1 a.m

The average wait time between trains is eight minutes and three minutes during rush hour.

 

BY PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION, TAXI AND BIKE!

Thousands of bicycle stands are available to cyclists near  metro stations as well as on main streets. Montréal is the first urban centre in the world to receive “Geotourism” accreditation from the National Geographic Society.  Montreal  has 350 kilometres of bike paths on its territory, including natural parks and suburbs. To make exploring the city easier, several bike paths lead to the heart of tourism areas.

Getting around by taxi, is easy. You can flag one down on the street or find them at one of the city’s many taxi stands or in front of most major hotels. A trip to the airport from downtown will cost you a flat rate of $35. Some taxis will transport bicycles.

Race Day Parking

On race day, we strongly suggest you take public transportation to get around. Once again, the Métro is safe, clean and affordable.  Coming from the South Shore there are parking spaces ($) available at the Longueuil-Université-de-Sherbrooke metro station parking facilities. From the North, you can park close to a metro station (outsite the marathon course) and then take the metro to your starting point. You can also park directly at one of the Olympic Stadium parkingn($) right at the Finish Line. Please make sure to avoid streets crossing the Marathon course.  There are two parking areas at the Olympique Stadium :4141 Pierre-de-Coubertin (opening at 5:45 am) and another one at 3200 Viau (opening at 6: 15 am). .

US Citizen entering Canada

Americans entering Canada are not required to present a passport.  However you must carry proof of your citizenship.  For more information visit Canada Border Agency and the US department of state

Wait time at the border

Montreal: What to do ? What to see?

With more than 3 millions people living on the Island, Montreal is one of the most fun and living canadian cities.  Internationnaly renown for it's Nightlife as well as for its cuisine, you will find some 3,000 boutiques,. shops and restaurant mostly located around Downtown and close to Ste-Catherine street. 

Feel free and don't hesitate to walk on St-Denis Street, from Ste-Catherine (downtown) to Mont-Royal (Plateau) as the area is filled with cafe, boutiques, various shops and many restaurants.

So you know, for a shopping spree well worth it, walk downton on Ste-Catherine street from the corner of Pell and Ste-Catherine; you will find the Eaton Centre, The Bay and Les Cours Mont-Royal for a more high end fashion statement.

The Old Montreal and the Old Port: for History, Music, Fine Dining, Arts or Shopping for Souvenirs.
